Part of me has always admired hackers. Not for the damage that they do, but for their skill, accomplishments, and persistence. In an article titled The New Faces of War, the author devotes a section to cyber warfare. Several examples are used to explain how hacking could cripple a country. Estonia’s economy was nearly shut down over a dispute with Russia. Russian hackers launch a full scale attack against the digital infrastructure over the movement of a World War II statue. The article also shares how China has launched Ghost Net to harvest information from government computers around the world. Estimated cost is four cents per computer.
In August three men were indited in the largest data breech in US history. The men stole data related to 40 million credit card customers of major retailers. After visiting the stores to see what type of registers were being used the hackers by using SQL injection, backdoor, and manipulation of corporate software to avoid detection. The cost to customers and compromised companies is unknown.
